A Simple Fire Extingusher June 26, 2006

I happened to be in Albany N.Y. over this past weekend and I had some spare time, I took a walk through the New York State Museum. I like museums and history, so I have been meaning to do this for a number of years.

There is a small portion of the museum dedicated to the events of 9-11. There is a entire fire truck that had been crushed and burned by the fall of the towers. There was a lucite box filled with weapons, handguns of all sorts and a shotgun, all of them had been badly twisted and burned beyond usability. There was a portion of a policemans holster, with NYPD stamped on it. But the thing that gave me pause was a fire extingusher. You know the kind I'm talking about, chrome plated and available on every floor on every public building in the U.S. The kind you take out of the recessed cubby that is built into the wall, you pull the pin and squeeze the handle. You've probably walked by hundreds of them in your life.

They had one of these extingushers in a lucite box and it was banged up and scorched and obviously could never be used. But the thing that really got to me, in remembering the enormous fire that resulted in the crashing of those two jets, the tag on the box said that the extingusher had been used.
