The Bill of Rights April 19, 2007

I’ve been thinking about this over the last few days and I thought I should comment. I had a conversation with a liberal about the freedom of speech and I had to correct his assumptions. He assumed that the Bill of Rights gives us the freedom of speech. He is wrong. The Bill of Rights does NOT give us the freedom of speech. The Bill of Rights prevents government from taking it away. The Bill of Rights is a limitation on the powers of government and not a granting of rights.

It’s an important distinction.
